Serena Williams' 'triumphant' N.Y. Fashion Week show featured lots of Drake and fringe

On Tuesday, Serena Williams held her second New York Fashion Week show for her HSN Signature Statement collection. There were drapey tops and fringed leather skirts aplenty, but there was also a lot of Drake.

Sure, the Canadian rapper is a well-established member of Williams’ entourage and her rumored boyfriend, but he was literally everywhere at her show, which was well received by the fashionistas in attendance. A few things about Serena’s show:

1. Drake sat front row.

He even shared a laugh with Anna Wintour. As one does.

2. The show featured two of his songs.

According to the New York Times, Hotline Bling and Back to Back blasted as the models walked the runway. (The show also featured Andra Day’s Rise Up, the song from Williams’ powerful Beats by Dre commercial.)

3. The two shared a moment backstage.

Adorable.

4. Serena seemed quite pleased with the whole affair, which took place just four days after her shock semifinal loss to Roberta Vinci.

5. The aforementioned Ms. Wintour, the editor of Vogue, isn’t just a fan of Roger Federer’s.

“Anna’s really been my mentor,” Serena before the show. “She’s gone over this whole collection.” Here’s an exclusive video of that meeting.

6. Serena’s show was praised as “triumphant” by the Daily Mail and a “smash hit collection” by Wintour’s Vogue underling Andre Leon Talley.

Though I like this, would it look out of place on a magician’s assistant?

7. The two best and two worst pieces from Serena’s show — which basically consisted of designs Ann Taylor might create if she was hanging out in VIP sections of clubs with the models — were these four.

8. But perhaps the the best look of all belong to Serena herself. (Fringe is apparently in this year, which is good news for Marty McFly in Back to the Future III. Seriously, it’s all fringe. If this were Project Runway, Heidi Klum might say “der is just no eemageenation!”)

9. And though you can’t blame Serena’s outside interests, such as designing a fashion line to be sold on HSN, on her U.S. Open loss, you can’t say for sure that Serena’s outside interests didn’t have an impact on her preparation for the Open.
